Sunday (1/18/15) Wrap Up
With each team in the mix for a medal, the day ended with some interesting results that could very easily have seen a different ending. Two of the four games went to penalty kicks and one of those resulted in a coin toss to decide a winner. Four teams (approx 70 players) gave their all on a great weekend of football and leaves the overall Maccabi soccer program in great position to field 2 quality teams in Santiago, Chile at the end of the year.
Additionally, the Maccabi program/players were also extended to at least two other teams, one of which won the tournament in the Over 40 King division, Green/White from Chicago was represented by Russell Rosenberg ('09, '11/12). Congratulations to our former team mate.
FC Maccabi (Joel Zuckerman '09) fell in the quarter final game to LA/DC United 0-3 which also included Maccabi players (Brothers Irad - '09 and Guy Young '15 candidate). FC Maccabi won their group earlier in the day and with limited players available, were unable to close out the QF match. Final results for FC Maccabi:
The O35 team lost in another close match 2-3 to Highlanders FC ending their first tournament together with a record of 1-1-2 (W-D-L). O35 Chairman Doug Baker commented on the weekend noting how well the team came together and performed as one. Looking forward to the next training session, the team will return home and work on their individual games in hopes of a final place on the Pan Am team. The game results are noted below.
The O40 team won their group and were only beaten through a penalty kick shootout 1-3. Looks like the team will be out practicing their spot kicks to avoid another early exit in their next competition. While the team didn't win the tournament, the main focus was always about developing the team for the Pan Am games and by every account, the team achieved that goal. The results of the tournament are shown directly below.
After finishing second in their group without losing a game, the O48 team were left with 5 subs for their QF game. In the first half, MUSA went behind early and struggled to keep hold of the ball as FC Kent City was in control from the outset. Within 20 minutes, another goal was netted and MUSA went two down and it could have been more if not for the strong goalkeeping by Phillip Fishel on loan from "Maccabi Tel Aviv". MUSA had their chances in the first half but were not able to stretch the FC Kent City goalkeeper too far and the half time whistle blew.
During half time, the team came together and gathered their focus and walked back on the pitch with a renewed purpose. With one goal in mind, MUSA pressed forward and began to win more possession of the ball by limiting the other team with quick tackling and better positional play. Passes that once went astray in the first half began connecting and the team created a number of solid chances but couldn't find the mark. The team's work rate finally paid off after a tactical positional change moved more men forward which only increased the pressure on FC Kent. A penalty kick was awarded and Marc Lebowitz stepped up again and buried it as he had done the previous day to begin the comeback. With time running out, MUSA was awarded a free kick and after hitting the bar, the rebound was poked in by Mark Wisnevitz sealing the comeback and a date with a PK shootout.
5 players were chosen and the kicks began. The team missed one of 5 as did FC Kent so it was now down to a coin flip after an entire weekend of soccer that saw MUSA48 not lose a single game. The coin flip went FC Kent's way and the tournament was over but not without the team feeling that they had accomplished something significant, and they had.
A successful weekend for the Maccabi program and for the players involved on each team.
The team management now redirects their attention to selecting the final team members that will represent the US in Chile. Team Chairs John Levene and Dan Indech were both pleased with the commitment, attitude and team effort shown throughout this selection/tryout process and can't wait to see the final pieces to the puzzle come together over the next few months. Coach Alan Bodenstein and Assistant Coach Don Kent (DKNY).
More to come shortly.

Sunday Update - King Cup
With all teams needing some positive result to move into the medal rounds, MUSA 48 team took the filed early this morning (8:45am) and walked away with their 3rd tie and second shutout 0 - 0 against a much weaker team than in game #1.
With this result, MUSA48 finishes second in their group and will play the first place team from Group B tonight at 5:40 at KZ-6.
In other games, MUSA 35 failed to capitalize on three chances and fell 0 - 1 but still have an outside chance for a medal round berth with a game later today.
At Freedom Park, MUSA 40 started slowly and while not generating much offense in the first 10 minutes, worked there way back into the game and had several chances late in the first half. With momentum on their side, 3 quick passes up front by Kuznits, Oren and Hoffer resulted in Hoffer securing his first ever Maccabi goal and what was eventually the game winner. Maccabi 40's win moved them into sole possession of first place and an evening contest against Group B 2nd place, Legends O40.
Again at Freedom Park, FC Maccabi avoided an intra-club tie with MUSA 40 by drawing their final first round game 0 - 0 and set up a QF match with another LA - DC United, managed by Maccabiah Alum Irad Young and his brother and current Maccabi Guy Young.
Good luck to all teams tonight....
